The Curse of Palmyra Island
As an ex-Coast Guardsman, former Merchant Marine and avid sailor, I have always been drawn to strange phenomena as it relates to the worlds oceans. My interest in nautical high weirdness was rekindled recently as a result of reading a book by Vincent Bugliosi titled "And the Sea Will Tell", the true story of a double murder that took place on isolated Palmyra Island in 1974.

Nature Group to Buy Pacific Atoll [Detail]
A tropical paradise once considered for use as an atomic waste dump will now be preserved for birds and animals instead. The Nature Conservancy plans to raise $37 million to buy Palmyra Atoll, the last intact marine wilderness in the U.S. tropics. THE ATOLL, located 1,052 miles south of Hawaii, includes 680 acres of land and 15,512 acres of pristine coral reefs, emerald islets and turquoise lagoons. An atoll is a coral island encircling a lagoon like a ring. Palmyra was formed by coral growth on the rim of an ancient volcano. Palmyra is the only nesting habitat for migratory seabirds and shorebirds within 450,000 square miles of Pacific Ocean. About a third of the atoll will become a Nature Conservancy preserve, with the remainder to be set aside as a national wildlife refuge.

United States v. Fullard-Leo [Detail]
Supreme Court's 1947 decision rejecting the government's 1939 claim to the atoll. Palmyra Island is around one thousand miles south of the main Hawaiian group. It is the first considerable body of land in that direction and lies between the Hawaiian Islands and Samoa. The Palmyra group is a coral covered atoll of about fifty islets, some with trees, and extends-reefs, intervening water and land-5 2/3 sea miles in an easterly and westerly direction and 1 1/3 sea miles northwardly and southwardly.

Palmyra: Pacific Paradise in Danger [Detail]
The Nature Conservancy is trying to buy Palmyra to keep it and its biological riches protected forever. The environmental group plans to raise $37-million dollars to pay for the atoll and establish a fund to maintain it for conservation and research, as well as a small scale eco-tourism site. They call it the last chance to truly protect an intact Pacific atoll ecosystem. Field biologists call it an environmental treasure of wildlife, plants and fish that are gone or disappearing elsewhere. You might call it paradise -- an uninhabited tropical island, where great swarms of rare, colorful birds gather to nest, where tall palms drop coconuts on sandy beaches, and where schools of large fish laze through warm lagoons.
